Harvey House Newstand at Depot

In 1915, the depot included a Harvey House Newstand, as depicted in this postcard.  It was located on the southeast corner of the building, fronting the platform.  Harvey House Restaurants were very popular among rail travelers, but not every stop boasted the fine, yet affordable, dining establishment.  Often those without restaurants were selected to establish a newstand which sold newspapers, tobacco, candy, gum, etc.   As a railroad town, Afton already boasted several hotels, boarding houses, and eating establishments.  Therefore, the Harvey House Newstand was a great fit.
